Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr, is convinced that his captain, John Obi Mikel will excel in his new assignment at China Super League, saying that the former Chelsea midfielder is an asset any coach can rely on.
Rohr noted that Mikel’s preference to join the Chinese league is good and a welcome development by his technical crew.
The Eagles coach made the declaration at the International Conference Centre venue of the 2016 GLO/CAF African football honours event.
“I think Mikel has made a right choice by joining the Chinese league where I believe he will get more playing times, unlike in Chelsea where he had been confined to the bench by coach, Antonio Conte.
“If you ask me, I will tell you that Mikel is a superb player that any coach would want to have. This was evident in his form under Chelsea’s interim coach of last season, Guus Huddink before Antonio Conte took over. And also the roles he has played since I took charge of the national team has been okay .
“On his move to China, I believe that it should be good news to soccer-loving Nigerians and particularly his fans. As I have always made it clear that players who are actively playing for their clubs, will always form the nucleus of the national team.
“Moreover, we all know that the young man is nearing the end of his career, so he needs a good deal to secure a better future for himself, which I believe that the China deal has provided.
“Most people are looking at the Chinese league as a mediocre one, but I bet you that in five years to come, if they continue at the pace that they are moving, that league will be the cynosure of all eyes and possibly outshine the English Premier League (EPL), owing to the kind of money people are investing in football in the Asian country.
Mikel, who played a total of 372 games for Chelsea, scoring 6 times, had last Thursday signed for a Chinese Super League club, Tianjin Teda, in a 3 years deal, believed to worth $140,000 per week.
