KUJE PRISON RIOT | Inmates angry over ban on use of Cellphones

Following the seizure of inmates’ cell phones in Kuje Prison by officials of the Nigeria Prison Service in the early hour of Monday, tension which almost led to a jail-break was witnessed.
Report had it that there was a riot in the federal prison facility, but was quickly brought under control.
One of the officials  stated on Sunday night as the inmates were denied making phone calls as usual.
The source said the authorities were compelled into taking the action to forestall any attempt of jail-break as being recorded in some prisons recently.
Shooting was heard continuously at the Kuje Prison, making residents fear and building up tension in the area.
But the prison official, who spoke in confidence said the situation has been brought under control as more security agents were drafted to the area and cordoned-off the entire facility.
Confirming the development, The FCT Controller of Prisons, Mr Daniel Odahro, on confirmed that there was a ‘minor riot’ by inmates at the Kuje Prison.
“There was a minor riot at the Kuje Prison, but the situation has been brought under control,” he said.
He explained that a ‘disagreement’ ensued at about 10.30am on Monday, when some inmates resisted the routine search in their cell phoness.
Odahro said the situation was subsequently brought under control by the security operatives on duty and that no inmate escaped from the facility.
