ABIA RERUN|APC Calls For Removal of Abia State REC

by on February 26, 2016
Ahead of the March 5 re-run election in Abia State, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), has called for the removal of the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC) if the state must witness a free-and-fair re-run election.
INEC has fixed March 5 as date for the re-run in Aba North state Constituency and Abia North Senatorial District.
A member of APC Board of Trustees, Ambassador Sam Nkire, who led a team of APC stakeholders in the state to the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja yesterday, raised concerns about the capability of the state INEC REC to conduct a free-and-fair re-run in the state.
Among the leaders in the delegation were the state governorship candidate, Anyim Nyerere, former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt Hon Stanley Ohajiriuka, former Deputy Governor of the state, Chris Akomas, state APC Chairman, Donatus Nwamkoa and the South-East ex-officio member, Nduka Anyanwu.
The party noted that the Abia State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to boast that it has the control of the state REC and other INEC officials ahead of the re- run.
Nkire, therefore, urged the National Headquarters of INEC to take over the conduct of the elections, adding that APC has lost confidence in the state.
“You know elections in Abia are characterised with riggings; most times results are written. What we are saying now is that we are an era of change; we want the world to note that we will not accept written results any longer.
“We call on INEC to supervise the two elections. We care confident that we will win the election because we have worked for it.
“So far, from experience, we have no confidence in INEC. If INEC in Abia State changes its ways, we shall come here to announce to you that there is a change. We are calling for the removal of the officials of INEC in Abia State.”
