Kogi State Elders Council for Good Governance has accused an aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party for next month’s governorship election in the state, Alhaji Jibrin Isah, popularly called Echocho, of pursuing spoiler tactics against PDP ahead of the poll.
In a statement on the state of affairs in the Kogi State PDP, the group said Echocho knew he could not put up a strong contest against the All Progressives Congress candidate but was only trying to prevent the emergence of a strong PDP candidate in order to give APC an easy win.
The PDP National Working Committee on Wednesday postponed its Kogi State governorship primary, earlier scheduled to hold on Thursday, to next Monday. The incumbent governor, Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada (rtd.) is seeking re-election under PDP. But APC held its primary election on August 29 and chose former governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu as governorship candidate for the November 21 election.
The statement signed by Ahamdu Ejiga and Sunday Olufemi, chairman and general secretary, respectively, of Kogi State Elders Council for Good Governance, said, “Let us not pretend for one moment that Alhaji Jibrin Isah (Echocho) is on a genuine mission in his quest for nomination as the candidate of the party for the 2015 gubernatorial election in Kogi State. Everybody on the street, in Kogi State, knows that Isah (Echocho), whose daughter is married to Prince Abubakar Audu’s son, has come on stage to do the bidding of his in-law, i.e, to deliver the state to the All Progressives Congress.”
Frowning on what it termed an undue recognition being accorded Echocho by the PDP national leadership, the group stated, “It is unimaginable that the person who is not known within party hierarchy both at the Ward, Local Government, Senatorial District and the State levels can purportedly be feeling to have followership to stand in a free and fair primary election.
Absolute care must not only be taken, it should be taken immediately to avoid a kind of political scenario being designed by this character in the PDP. It is obvious that the heart and soul of Isah (Echocho) is no longer with PDP. He is unwittingly orchestrating this crisis as a pay-back for his losing the governorship ticket in 2011.”
