Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has asked the Federal Government to immediately end the obvious and worrisome injustice and marginalisation of the South East region.
He warned that if the trend persisted, Biafra becoming a political entity will be inevitable and that one Nigeria may cease to exist.
Speaking at The AUTHORITY Newspapers maiden Award ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday, Ezeife, who was the chairman of the occasion, said: “If the injustice and the marginalisation of the South East of Nigeria persists, then Biafra as a physical political entity becomes inevitable and one Nigeria ceases to exist.
He said: “Our people cannot live without honour as seen now in Nigeria. That is why Ndigbo had the highest rate of suicide during the slave trade. They said, “Eji ndu emejini”, meaning ‘life without honour is not worth living’. Nor can we feel rejected as we do feel now in Nigeria and continue to remain in Nigeria much longer. As it is said; ‘Onye Ajuru Adigh Aju Onwe Ya’, meaning ‘who is rejected does not reject himself/herself.”
Ezeife asked: “How much IPOB and MASSOB activities did we have during Olusegun Obasanjo’s eight years in office as president of Nigeria, and how much of such activities did we experience during Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure. But as soon as Muhammadu Buhari came to power and denied offices to the South East and even removing them from the offices they occupied, an abuse of Federal Character provision. And then the wanton killings of an unarmed South East, IPOB and MASSOB started being in the headlines.
“So, innocent youths have been killed in Aba even more in Onitsha, and recently, what does not even concern Nigeria, as youths who found Trump exciting went out to celebrate and they were mowed down. There is no doubt that the present Federal government is strongly pursuing the South East out Nigeria and against the interest of Nigeria. There is too much blood of the innocent flowing all over Nigeria. This cannot continue if one Nigeria remains.”
Speaking on Igbo Presidency, he narrated, “Obasanjo came out of prison and became president of Nigeria. Since then he had hands in the emergence of President Yar’dua, Goodluck Jonathan and to some extent, President Buhari, and very soon in the emergence of President Okeke.”
The he went on, “What is Obasanjo’s motivation in proposing Igbo President in 2019, I believe it is simply the survival of Nigeria. I quote him, The problem justice and marginalization have been the major sources of conflict between ethnic groups and regions of the country.” As he stated, “it was part of this resolve for a just and fair country that made him to work for the emergence of a South-South president in 2019.
According to Obasanjo, “Peace and justice are needed to solve crisis. I do not dispute Bishop Akinsayan’s assertion that “Obasanjo is a special gift to Nigeria”.
“So, should there be a change and justice prevail in Nigeria, the youth of Yoruba, elders of Yoruba and so also of Fulani, Hausa and every group in Nigeria will exuberantly enjoy this country the Almighty God created and designed for un-matched greatness. Let me simply add that under any and every situation, the rule of law and the constitution of Nigeria must prevail.”
