Indications emerged on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari may be considering immediate past INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega for appointment as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
According to a State House Correspondent who spoke to BREAKING TIMES on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, President Buhari is considering Jega for the job in the face of his performance as INEC Chairman and the huge public goodwill he enjoyed both in Nigeria and abroad during his tenure at INEC.
“Jega is being favorably considered. His CV is already with the President and he could be announced any moment from now”, the source disclosed.
Jega was until June 30, 2015, Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He is publicly acclaimed by a section of Nigeria to have credibly managed the outcome of the March 28, 2015 presidential election that saw Buhari emerging President-Elect.
However, Jega has come under criticism from a section of the polity who say he will be remembered for the disenfranchisement of millions of Nigerians who could not vote in the March 28, 2015 Presidential elections due to the poor working of card readers – a situation which could have been avoided if he had listened to sound advice from well-meaning individuals and organizations regarding their deployment without proper testing.
Other individuals allegedly being considered by Buhari for the position of SGF include former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi.
