Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria has revealed why he chose the number 7 shirt when he joined the club in a British record transfer in the summer.
The stringy speedster had a whirlwind start to life at Old Trafford before a slight loss of form and loss of injury were coupled with rumours that he was unsettled and still fancied a move to PSG.
However, Di Maria dismissed those rumours and has spoken to Spanish paper Sport about moving to United and why he settled upon an iconic number worn by the likes of ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I knew that the number seven was available. So I could either choose that or the number nine,” he said.
“I wanted the number seven, though, because I knew who had worn it in the past. Also, I have the same number when I play for Argentina.”
Other illustrious members of the number 7 club at United include David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best.
