Don’t Use Ad-hoc Staff as Returning / Collation Officers – Senator Mao Ohuabunwa

by on March 11, 2016
Re-elected Abia North Senator, Mao Ohuabunwa, has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against using ad- hoc staff as Returning Officers and Collation Officers in future elections.
Ohuabunwa who won last Saturday’s Abia North rerun poll told journalists in Umuahia, the Abia State capital that the continued use of ad-hoc staff for such critical offices during elections could truncate Nigeria’s democracy as most of them were inexperienced and prone to corruption.
The Senator alleged that the Retuning Officer as well as Local Government Collation Officers who supervised the election in his zone were highly compromised and called for their immediate investigation.
He claimed that he was leading his closest rival at the poll, ex- Governor Orji Uzor Kalu with a margin of over 7,000 votes after the poll result in all five councils “until the second batch of the fake result of 14,000 votes from Bende Local Government Area was brought out in favour of Kalu.”
