Kogi APC gubernatorial candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu will on Monday in Lokoja receive the endorsement of Jibrin Isah Echocho, a PDP Kogi gubernatorial aspirant who lost to incumbent Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada in the just concluded PDP Kogi gubernatorial primary, sources familiar with the development disclosed to BREAKING TIMES on Sunday.
According to reports, Echocho is endorsing Abubakar Audu based on an agreement reached between both men on a power-sharing formula for Kogi State. According to the source who spoke to BREAKING TIMES on condition of anonymity on Sunday, the agreement will enable a power transition from Abubakar Audu to Echocho after the completion of Audu’s last possible term as Governor of Kogi State if he wins the November 21, 2015 governorship election in the state.
“The agreement is that Audu will hand over to Echocho when his tenure elapses in 2019 if he wins the forthcoming governorship election. But we don’t know how they intend to pull this off because both Wada and Echocho are from Kogi East Senatorial district. Echocho and Wada are from the same Dekina local government area of Kogi in Kogi East. Audu himself is from Ofu local government area in Kogi Central. This is practically impossible. It is an agreement built on selfishness and greed because it has no consideration for other zones in Kogi and there is no way it will work. It is this same Audu who had a similar agreement to hand over power to someone from Kogi West. You can see that the development of Kogi is not on their agenda. They have not won elections and they are already sharing power among themselves”, the source said.
Echocho, a prominent PDP chieftain lost the PDP gubernatorial primary to Governor Idris Wada after several attempts by the party’s leadership to prevail on Echocho to step down and support the re-election of Governor Wada failed.
“How can you say you are a loyal PDP man and then go and endorse APC governorship candidate? Why can’t Echocho respect the decision of the PDP delegates and support his party to victory? This has been the problem of PDP where if one person does not get what he wants, he starts working against the party. It is sad”, a PDP youth leader from Kogi State who did not want to be named told BREAKING TIMES.
Efforts to reach Echocho on Sunday to either confirm or deny his reported endorsement of APC’s Abubakar Audu failed, as our reporter could not reach him at the time of filing this report.
