An Upper Shari’ah Court in Kano yesterday sentenced an Islamic scholar, Abdulaziz Dauda, popularly known as Abdul Inyass, to death for blasphemous statements against the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
“This court has sentenced you, Abdulaziz Dauda also known as Abdul Inyass, to death by hanging for blasphemous statements against Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and three years jail term for inciting public disturbance,” he said. The judge said Inyass had 30 days to appeal the judgment.
Abdulaziz Dauda was charged on a two-count charge of blasphemy against the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and inciting public disturbance contrary to Section 275 of Kano State Shari’ah Penal Code Law 2000.
Abdulaziz Dauda was sued by the Kano state government after delivering a lecture in the state which caused a riot that led to the burning of a court at Rijar-Lemo quarters.
According to the charge sheet, Inyass had while delivering the lecture on May 13, 2015 made blasphemous statements against the holy prophet.
The state prosecution counsel, Barrister Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki said that the convict had pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him in one of his appearances before the court.
The judgment was delivered amid tight security as heavily armed DSS operatives were deployed to the court. After the judgment, the convicted cleric was flown to Abuja by DSS officials.
