The Imo State Government has said it had begun the planting of trees and grasses in Owerri , the state capital .
The General Manager , Imo Environmental Transformation Commission and Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment , Alex Emeziem , who briefed journalists after inspecting the sites , said the state governor , Emeka Ihedioha , was conscious of the environment .
Emeziem said within the first 100 days in office of the governor , 5 ,000 trees and grasses would be planted in the state capital .
He said apart from beautification of the city , the trees and grasses would add value to the ecosystem .
Emeziem stressed that the commission would sponsor a bill in the state House of Assembly that would make it impossible for anyone to build a house in the state without planting a specified number of trees .
He said the government would do everything humanly possible to make Owerri the cleanest city in Nigeria .
Emeziem said the Imo ENTRACO had employed 600 people who would be sweeping the state capital. He said the salaries of the “city sweepers” would not be less than the current minimum wage .
He said “within the first 100 days of the Rebuild Imo administration of Governor Emeka Ihedioha , we will plant 5,000 trees in the state capital . We will plant grasses . The governor is interested in the environment .
“This programme will generate 2 ,000 jobs .We have recruited 600 sweepers who will not earn below the current minimum wage. We urge the people to support our project .We now have a rebranded ENTRACO . We will do our job with high sense of responsibility .”
