Former Governor of Rivers State and Director General of President Buhari’s presidential campaign, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is behind a new plot to appoint AIG of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin as the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sources familiar with the development told BREAKING TIMES on Tuesday.

According to an informed source who spoke on condition of anonymity to BREAKING TIMES, Amaechi is working hard behind the scenes to install Ogunsakin as new EFCC boss in a bid to compromise the Commission’s investigation of pending corruption cases during his time as Governor of Rivers State.

“Ogunsakin and Ameachi are like 5 and 6 and he is doing everything to get him appointed as EFCC Chairman because of the damning cases already pending with the EFCC against him”, our source disclosed.

The plot to compromise corruption cases against Amaechi is not without the backing and approval of the Buhari presidency as plans are already in motion to redeploy top ranking police officers who served under Amaechi’s tenure as Rivers State Governor, our source reiterated. “The soft-landing for Amaechi is being considered as a reward for the work he did as Buhari’s presidential campaign director. At this rate, and if he is able to swing his plan of making Ogunsakin EFCC Chair, he will walk away untouched”, the source said.

Mr. Ogunsakin was a former police commissioner under Amaechi’s administration in Rivers State before he became AIG in charge of Zone 6, headquartered in Calabar. Shortly before the last general elections, former IG of Police, Suleiman Abba asked him to return to Rivers to oversee police deployment for the election there. But security reports made available to the Presidency confirmed Ogunsakin was “doing deals” with Amaechi, hence the Presidency directed his redeployment from Rivers State.

Amaechi has been described by his successor in office, Nyesom Wike as the most corrupt governor in Nigeria.

According to Wike, between January and November 2014, Amaechi squandered over N298 billion that accrued to the state from the Federation Accounts and loans obtained from various commercial banks.

Wike, further alleged that between December 2014 and January 2015, Amaechi, through the Government House and the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government expended N11 billion, believed to have been channeled into the campaign machinery of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari was elected riding on the wave of strong anti-corruption sentiment. However, three months after his election into office, key members of his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) fingered in colossal proportions of graft have been seen around him walking free and even assisting him with governance duties.

In 2014, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, a member of Buhari’s ruling APC party and current Governor of Kebbi State was indicted by the United States Department of Justice in a case of $480 million in corruption proceeds hidden in bank accounts around the world by former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and his co-conspirators. Bagudu and others, according to the US Department of Justice “embezzled, misappropriated and extorted billions of dollars from the government of Nigeria and others, then laundered their criminal proceeds through U.S. financial institutions and the purchase of bonds backed by the United States.”
