I might not contest for 2019 Presidential Election – Buhari

by on January 19, 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday he does not know if he will seek re-election in 2019 and the decision is personal and also for Nigerians.

Buhari, 75, was speaking in a radio interview. He was elected in 2015 but spent much of 2017 in Britain being treated for an undisclosed ailment that left him visibly weakened. Some have questioned his willingness or ability to run again.

Adebayo Shittu, Nigeria’s minister of communications who played a prominent role in Buhari’s 2015 campaign, has said he would chair a group to support the re-election of the president and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Such campaigns by supporters often pave the way in Nigeria for a president to declare his intention to run again.

Analysts say the fact that Shittu has discussed campaign arrangements with Buhari and then made it public is a sign that he may have given his approval.

Nigeria will hold presidential elections on Feb. 16, 2019 and parties have between Aug. 18 and Oct. 7 this year to select their candidates.

In a blow to the president, Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and key Buhari ally, quit the ruling All Progressives Congress in December and said he was prepared to run in 2019. Last month he joined the opposition People’s Democratic Party.

If the president want to re- contest, he is free to do so. Anybody is free to contest the 2019 Elections. But this is a very important information to those who want to run for 2019: Nigeria in 2018 is celebrating a year of New Begining. The year will climax in 2019 with a brand new government devoid of APC, PDP, and the old politicians syndrome. If you want to invest in politics, my advice is put in what you can loss without much ado that may result in hypertension. 2019 Election will only favour the youths that are righteous, focuss and target oriented. Elders who used their political influence to initiate the youths into one cult or the other will certainly loss the battle in 2019. All the grand fathers in politics should plan to resign. Youths who are prepared will takeover. Election in a digital age needs digital minds and that can only be found in the youths. I think mr president has the right to seek re-election BUT he doesn’t deserve it . His government has not done Nigeria any good. A bag of rice was # 6500-#7000 before he came to power. Petrol was #87 when he came, now how much is it. Any body that want this government back in power is a devil and enemy of common man on the street.
