João Félix – The Next Football Sensation?
Football legends are known to start young. Pelé, the legendary Brazilian player, scored his first World Cup goal at the age of 19 – and so did Kylian Mbappé, the French football sensation that won the Best Young Player award at last year’s FIFA World Cup (and was signed by Paris Saint Germain for more than 180 million euros). While João Félix Sequeira doesn’t have such major events to boast with – he was called up for Portugal’s 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals by manager Fernando Santos, though – he already shows the signs of a nascent football legend. And there are many important international clubs that would love to see him join their ranks.
João Félix – A short biography
After a year with FC Porto, a team name that will surely sound familiar if you follow international sports or are involved in Betway football betting, Félix was let go by the team because of his “slight frame”. He moved to Porto’s local rival, Lisbon-based Benfica, in 2015. In 2016, at the age of 16, he made his professional debut with Benfica’s reserve team in LigaPro, the second-highest division of Portuguese football. He made an impression, it seems because he played in 13 more games during the season, scoring three goals. In the 2018-2019 season, Félix was promoted to the first team where he did great – he even scored a hat-trick in Benfica’s Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt this April, becoming the youngest player ever to do so.
During his time with Benfica’s youth team, Félix was called one of the most promising players there – and he apparently delivered. He was compared to former Benfica superstars like Rui Costa and João Pinto, while Costa himself compared the youngster to Kaká. Like Cristiano Ronaldo was at the time, he is a player with a great future.
Let the bidding war begin
Like all other promising players, Félix captured the attention of talent scouts all over the world. Reportedly, there are several major teams courting him: rumors speak of clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City, and Real Madrid seriously considering buying out the player and signing him with their own team. Rumors are circulating in the press about fabulous amounts attached to his contract – if the rumors are true, his transfer could be the most expensive of the year so far.
According to the football media, Benfica wants GBP120 million to let João Félix go. It is rumored that Real Madrid has made a counteroffer of 80 million euros but it was quickly swept away from the table by an offer reportedly posted by Manchester City – GBP102 million. If the two clubs reach a deal, Félix can be expected to join a brand new team for the coming season.
