Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel will battle with his National team mates, Victor Moses and kelechi Iheanacho for the winner of the 2016 Nigeria Pitch Awards best player, which is billed for June 10, after the Eagles 2019 AFCON qualifying match against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo
The organisers of Nigeria Pitch Awards yesterday released the final shortlist of three players who will do battle for the King of the Pitch award, given out to the best Nigerian player in the year under review.
The list, which has Victor Moses of Chelsea, Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City and John Obi Mikel, formerly of Chelsea but now with Tianjin Teda of China, noted that Moses was nominated for having an outstanding end to the year 2016 both for Nigeria and Chelsea, with his two goals ensuring Nigeria defeated Algeria 3-1 in their last World Cup 2018 Qualifiers played in Uyo last year.
Mikels role in ensuring that Nigeria won the Bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil earned him a place in the final list of nominees for the awards, while Manchester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, completed the list despite his current predicament at the club, where he has been left out by manager Pep Guardiola. He is however nominated for his goal scoring form with the Nigerian team, having scored two goals in the Eagles three games towards the end of last year.
In the women category, which is referred to as the queen of the pitch, Guingamp of France forward Desire Oparanozie, Asisat Oshoala formerly of Arsenal and Onome Ebi of FC Minsk of Belarus will do battle for the prestigious award.
