Tottenham want Leicester duo

Tottenham are watching both N’Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy at Leicester, writes the Sunday People’s Neil Moxley .

The north London club have been interested in England striker Vardy for some time but he is not the only name in the frame at White Hart Lane.

It is understood Kante would be of more interest to Mauricio Pochettino.

Losing the midfielder, signed last season by the Foxes for £5.5million, would be a huge blow to Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri.

But he has four other central midfielders – Danny Drinkwater, Matty James, Andy King and Goekhan Inler. The Foxes are also close to adding Daniel Amartey to their squad from FC Copenhagen.

Are Liverpool battling United for Schmeichel?

Kasper Schmeichel is on Liverpool’s wanted list, writes Neil Moxley in the Sunday People.

The Reds made an enquiry for the Leicester City keeper as they step up their search for a new No.1. They were told that the 29-year-old Denmark star would not be sold during this transfer window as the Foxes push for the title – but the pressure will be renewed at the end of the campaign.

Clearly, Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp wants top-class competition for Simon Mignolet . Even though the Belgium keeper has agreed a new five-year deal, Klopp was once again critical of his team’s ability to defend set-pieces in their 5-4 win at Norwich.

Further Teixeira blow for Liverpool

Liverpool’s hopes of landing Alex Teixeira were receding last night after Shakhtar Donetsk refused to lower their valuation of the Brazilian striker.

Donetsk have rejected an initial £24.6million bid for the 26-year-old and made it clear that their £37.6m valuation is non-negotiable.

Liverpool are still hoping to strike a compromise deal of around £30m, which will include add-ons.

But the Ukrainian club are maintaining a hard-line stance that has brought negotiations to a stalemate.

Sunday Mirror Sport understands that Liverpool’s offer remains on the table – along with a commitment to make further payments, based on Teixeira being a success at Anfield.

Done deals in the Football League

Peterborough United have been delving into non-league and have confirmed the signings of two young stars.

Aaron Williams and Callum Chettle have both made the move from Nuneaton Town to sign for the Posh.

Williams, a striker, and Chettle, a midfielder, both only joined Nuneaton in the summer, making the move up from a league below.

But both adapted superbly to the National League North and helped Town into promotion contention.

Palace still in the market

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew is still looking for signings this month.

The Eagles scored their first goal in eight hours of Premier League football on Saturday but are slowly dropping down the table.

Pardew said: “We are looking to bring a player in, no doubt about that. The boys would like to see a player in the changing room and enter the fore.

“We have Bolasie and Sako out, so we are missing offensive talent and it was difficult for me to put anything on from the bench that would change the game today.”

Tottenham are keen on signing highly-rated Gambia star Jagne Pa Modou, according to the Daily Star.

The left-back is currently valued at £4million by Swiss side FC Sion, where he is currently plying his trade.

But it is thought that Daniel Levy is keen to drive down the price of the 26-year-old, as he is in the last year of his contract.

Modou (centre on picture) can also play on the left side of midfield and featured in both games against Liverpool in the Europa League earlier this season.

Carragher says Palace SHOULD sign Bendtner and Adebayor

Jamie Carragher has urged Crystal Palace to sign former Arsenal pair Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Adebayor – despite admitting 90 per cent of Premier League bosses wouldn’t fancy the duo.

“I really don’t see what the problem would be for Pardew if he lands one or the other,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“What has he got to lose? Palace aren’t scoring and if Bendtner or Adebayor don’t change that, they will not be in a worse position. Bendtner would be a loan deal, so should it not work out, he can just be sent back to Wolfsburg.

“Adebayor would be a short-term contract and could be released. If, on the other hand, they do begin scoring, it turns out to be a shrewd piece of business.”

Barcelona forward Tello joins Fiorentina

Barcelona have announced that Cristian Tello will join Italian side Fiorentina on loan until the end of the current campaign, bringing his current loan agreement with Porto to an end.

The 24-year-old joined the Portuguese outfit in the summer of 2014 on a two-year deal and made 33 appearances in all competitions last term.

Tello has played 19 times in total this season, scoring two goals.

A statement on Barcelona’s official website said: “FC Barcelona and ACF Fiorentina have reached an agreement for the loan of Cristian Tello until 30 June 2016, once his current loan agreement until the end of the season with FC Porto is rescinded.”

Pochettino reveals why he’s yet to sign a striker

Mauricio Pochettino is dragging his heels over a new striker at Tottenham because of a painful experience at Southampton.

The Spurs boss had a settled dressing room at St Mary’s two years ago when he signed Dani Osvaldo from Roma for £12.8million.

The Argentine-born Italy striker had scored 28 goals in 57 appearances for Roma and looked a perfect fit.

But midway through his debut season, the Saints suspended him for head-butting and punching team-mate Jose Fonte in training.

And Poch is determined not to upset the club’s title bid by rushing into the wrong signing this month.

He said: “You know the problems — what happened with Jose Fonte.

“We took a decision to put Osvaldo out of the changing room because I have to have discipline.

“To play for me you have to have good behaviour and be in tune with your team-mates. His behaviour was unacceptable and we were very strong with him.”

Merson hails Southampton’s Austin deal

Paul Merson believes Southampton’s signing of Charlie Austin is the deal of the window so far.

The Saints pulled the trigger last weekend to seal a £4million move for the QPR forward.

And Merson believes at that price he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

“The best buy so far has to be Charlie Austin because £4m is a steal,” he wrote in the today’s Daily Star.

They say his knees are a bit dodgy and he would have been free next summer but at £4m it’s worth it.

“He plays games and scores goals.”

Gibson needs “specific” loan move, says Martinez

Darron Gibson needs to find a “specific” loan move – otherwise he will stay at Everton for the rest of the season.

The Blues want to send Gibson out of Goodison on a short-term deal between now and the end of the campaign, report the Liverpool Echo.

Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Sunderland were said to be showing an interest in the 28-year-old and Roberto Martinez says the decision where to send Gibson will entail a lot of thought.

“At the moment, it is a situation where we sat down with the player and his representative and it is important for Darron that he plays football,” Martinez said.

“In the same way, he is an important player for us and though we have huge competition for places in that area, his experience, know-how and attacking quality is important for the team.

“If there is a situation that suits all parties then we will look into it but, in the same way, Darron will fight for his place and continue to be an integral part of the team.”
