Man killed by “tragic accidental discharge”

A man in his 30s, Bolaji Odejimi of Field Base was at the weekend allegedly killed by a dane gun one said to have been shot by Murtala Barde of Gwanba. But the police said it appears to be a “tragic accidental discharge.”

According to eye witnesses, the incident occurred near Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps office while Barde was riding his motorcycle with his Dane gun hanging across his shoulders. He collided with another motor cycle causing the loaded gun to explode and the stray bullet hit Odejimi, who was sitting in front of his house probably watching at passersby.

He was rushed to the General Hospital Suleja where he was pronounced dead, while Barde and one Mike Onope are still receiving treatment.

The deceased has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Confirming the incident, Suleja Area Commander, Paul Odama noted that, “So far, we have absolutely no reason to believe this was anything more than a tragic accidental discharge.

“We make this known because accidents happen. When two motorcycles crash, traffic officers call them collision, but the members of the public refer to them as ‘accidents.’ Why? They are not intentional.

“We extend our sympathy to the deceased’s family, yet the man with the dane gun will suffer as well.

“He will bear the burden of the catastrophic event. Though, the indicator seems to declare it was an accident”.
