A statement released by NIMASA noted that a full investigation has been opened regarding the abduction.

Two boats of armed men attacked the cargo ship Szafir (Sapphire) about seven nautical miles east of Brass, southern Nigeria, in the early hours of Friday morning.

Eleven members of the Polish crew managed to lock themselves in the engine room, but the attackers kidnapped five men, including the captain, and fled the scene.

No contact has been made by the pirates about a ransom, as of yet.

According to NIMASA, cargo ship ‘Szafir’ has been secured. It was being operated by Polish company EuroAfrica.

The vessel which has been rescued by NIMASA is currently sailing to Onne port under the Nigerian Navy escort for protection and further investigation,’’ the statement confirmed.

The Nigerian Navy and other security agencies are involved in the search for the pirate vessels.
