World Cup winner, Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has won the 2018 Ballon d’Or.
The 33 years old attacking midfielder became the first player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award in more than a decade.Former Brazil and AC Milan forward Kaka, in 2007, was the last player other than Messi or Ronaldo to win it.
Modric, won his third successive Champions League in May before helping Croatia to a first World Cup final.
Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer, came second.
Barcelona forward Messi finished fifth, with Atletico Madrid frontman Antoine Griezmann and PSG attacker Kylian Mbappe – both of whom won the World Cup with France – third and fourth respectively.
Meanwhile,Lyon and Norway striker Ada Hegerberg has won the inaugural Women’s Ballon d’Or award.
The 23-year-old scored in this year’s Champions League final as French side Lyon beat Wolfsburg 4-1 in Kiev.
Wolfsburg and Denmark striker Pernille Harder was second, Germany midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan third and England and Lyon defender Lucy Bronze sixth.
The Ballon d’Or award was voted for by journalists.
