The Nigeria Football Federation and Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr officially signed a new contract at a ceremony last week Wednesday in Lagos.
Key clauses in the contract were that the coach must qualify the Super Eagles for the 2019 AFCON and take the team to at least the semifinal of the tournament. “The mandate is very clear; the first contract stipulated that he must qualify the Eagles for the 2018 World Cup, he achieved that and that is why the NFF has granted him an extension of two years even when the existing deal still has about six months to run. It is clearly stated in the new contract that the Eagles must win the ticket to AFCON 2019 and they have to reach the semifinal of the tournament.
“So much premium is placed on AFCON because we missed the last two editions of the tournament and the NFF wants to make a statement with the next one. Rohr has agreed to walk away if he doesn’t achieve the mandate,” a source in the NFF’s headquarters told our correspondent.
The NFF, at the contract-signing ceremony, confirmed that the coach got an enhanced package but did not mention the figure. New Telegraph has learnt that the coach would earn a salary in the region of $60,000- per month after the company bankrolling the pay, Aiteo Group, endorsed the new deal.
Meanwhile, the NFF may increase the backroom staff of the team ahead of the start of the World Cup. The federation, our correspondent learnt, would use part of the $500, 000 grants from the Confederation of African Football to World Cup participating countries from the continent to hire more hands that will help Rohr at the tournament. “One of the technical people that will be hired is a Physical and Psychology Performance expert,” a source said.
