Troops of the Nigerian Army deployed at Efut Esighi Waterfront in Bakassi, Cross River State yesterday repelled an early morning attack led by the suspected criminal kingpin, Benjamin Simplee (AKA G1), leader of the Bakassi Strike Force.
Two of the suspected militants were killed while many escaped with gunshot wounds during the unprovoked attack, according to army spokesman, Col Sani Usman Usman, in a press statement he issued on Saturday.
The militants who reportedly came in several speed boats however, burnt down a buffalo pick up van belonging to the troops.
Usman said that a soldier lost his life while two others earlier declared missing were found alive.
He said: “Today at the early hours of the morning suspected militants led by the declared wanted criminal kingpin, Benjamin Simplee (AKA G1), leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, in several speed boats attacked troops deployed at Efut Esighi Waterfront in Bakassi LGA of Cross River.
“During the attack, a soldier was killed in action while 2 soldiers were missing in action. They also burnt a buffalo pick up vehicle. The troops have also killed 2 of the attackers while the rest escaped with gunshot wounds.
“However, the reinforcement sent have found the missing soldiers. In addition, the troops location have been reinforced with more
gunboats and air component. The clearance and pursuit operation is ongoing.”
