Rainstorm kills five in Lokoja


Tragedy struck in lokoja the kogi state capital yesterday when rainstorm killed five people including a pregnancy woman.

According to an eye witness, the victims were said to have been unlucky when a big tree feel on them at hydro Junction lokoja killing them on the spot . The storm was coming barely one week when similar incidences was recorded in Okehi and ogori/magongo destroying properties worth millions of naira and rendering several persons homeless.

Eyewitness account revealed that, some of the deceased where inside a tricycle popularly called kekenapep while others were passer bye scampering for safety when the storm was heavy. It was learnt that, attempt by residents to rescue them never yielded result as they were all confirmed dead upon arriving a near by hospital. As at the time of filing this report, excavators from the state government have began immediate clearing of the road as it obstructed free flow of traffic.

Expressing sadness, the administrator of Lokoja local government Shiru Lawal lamented that the incidence remains a great shock to the people of the community adding that such death have not been recorded in the history of the local government. He however stressed the need for the current administration to cut down old trees that could pose dangers when natural disaster occurs.
