Release Nnamdi Kanu, FFK, Sambo Dasuki – Buhari Urged

by on May 30, 2016

As the nation marks its Democracy Day and President Muhammadu Buhari’s first year in office, Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has asked the President to release all political prisoners including Mr Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Condemning the continuous detention and trial of Kanu, HURIWA also stated the failure of Buhari’s administration to respect due process of the law in the cases involving such political opponents like erstwhile Director of Media of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh; former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and the immediate past National Security Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
“In January this year, two courts granted bail to the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mr Nnamdi Kanu, including a Federal High Court in Abuja but the President personally granted extensive media interviews whereby he prejudiced and intimidated judges to steer clear of granting bails to the duo of Kanu and Dasuki for purportedly committing in his words serious offences”, the body said.
In a press statement, HURIWA noted that, “Ever since that Presidential Media Chat, the courts and the judges have consistently failed to use their powers under Section 6 of the Constitution to compel the executive to comply with the bail orders.
“Just as the Court of Appeal has followed the body language of Mr President by affirming the denial of bail to Kanu whose so -called offence is for calling for the actualisation of a separate state out of Nigeria to be called Biafra to be composed of the South East if a referendum agrees with this aspiration”.
HURIWA said it considers Kanu as well as other named detainees as political prisoner who should be released forthwith. It maintained that the Universal Declaration of Human rights guarantees the rights to freedom of speech including the rights to agitate for separate statehood.

Comment…buhari is not a true democrat and he can never be. he doesn’t respect the rule of law and Nigeria is bigger than his military ideology. the level of his incompetency will lead Nigeria no where. buhari has succeeded by using his political elements to intimidate most people that would have help him to organize the country and with this uncivilize attitude he is heading no where. Buhari change mantra has became an incurable syndrome to this country and I can see revolution coming if things continue just like this. Buhari should be awared that Ibos and other concerned Nigerians are very wise now than before he should get ready to with stand the forces that is coming.

The best thing for president buhari to do is to embrace dialogue with the Niger delta, else I don’t see this ending through the use of military. We are talking about billions oil installation in Niger delta of wish some of them have been blown up and many more will soon fellow. This can not be won with military, Obasonjo tried using military and it didnt work. The earlier FG embrace in a dialogue with Niger delta, the better for the country. The oil blocks should be relocated, that is part of there grievances and I know is not going to be easy for those in the north to relinquish this oil blocks. They will fight tooth and nail to make sure they keep it and buhari will be siding the north as usual. The result will be the continues bombing of those oil installation in Niger delta. The north have been enjoying this for a long time and they will deem it to be foolish if they let it return to the rightful owner. Jonathan went in there and saw how this oil blocks were distributed among the northern caucus and the trumpet was blown for all to hear. Is time to correct the injustice that has been going on since after the Biafra war.
