– Ekweremadu has proposed that the 36 states be collapsed into 6 zone.

Nigeria’s deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has called for the collapse of the 36 states of the federation into six geopolitical zones.
According to the legislator, the move is a drastic restructuring of the country to avoid continually hindering of development.

The abolition of the 36 states, he said, would release the latent potentials for growth by the regions, which he said, were, over the years, foiled by the reckless derailment of the country’s federalism by successive military governments.

Ekweremadu’s positions were offered in his new book, Who will love my country: Ideas of building the Nigeria of our dreams , which is due for public presentation tomorrow, April 27 in Abuja.

The Deputy President of the Senate praised the nation’s founding fathers, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamadi Azikiwe and Sir Ahmadu Bello, for espousing federalism as the basis of the country’s federation at independence.

He said that suggestions that fiscal federalism would bring about distortive growth were untenable, affirming that even in a forest, not all trees are equal.

Good idea. But I see noting wrong with the present system. More state and local government brings governance close to the people. The regional government is not new to Nigerians. The deference with what we run now and then is the fact that our past leaders under regional government were not as corrupt as our present leaders.
Civilization expand the people scoop, ideas in corruption. The corruption of Okotieboh then Finance minister and co was a child’s play compared to what we experience now.
Some roads constructed under Midwestern Nigeria is still solid till date. Today billions will be spent on road we all will hail the government and before 8 years the road is bad. Sincerity is all we need.
Again our past leaders ventured into viable investment such as Asaba textile mail, Alaja steel etc. Today leaders are lazy. They are all waiting for federal allocation.

Comment…I support 100%. Research shows man’s biggest problem is “division” which continues to bring disunity, disagreements etc. Sir with your suggestion l see a more contained government, so contained in a way government officials will be accountable because the excess waste holes will be blocked. It will make communities see themselves as local bodies, while the local bodies will be seen in their states as zones and zones through their zonal bodies will be seen as nations in a country called NIGERIA! It’s as simple as it is.
