Samsung has told customers that it is working on a solution to an apparently limited performance problem with Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets.
Users have been complaining about problems with their new devices, which are being blamed on poorly configured RAM. The fault was brought directly to the firm’s attention on Facebook by a user who asked for a fix.
The problem is that too much RAM is being consumed by the hardware, and apps are being forced to close or are just not performing well as a result.
A report on the AndroidCommunity website said that the handsets are using as much as 2.5GB of the 3GB of DDR4 RAM as standard, which leaves little capacity for anything else.
Samsung has promised that a fix is coming. However, this guidance has not come from a particularly official channel.
The Facebook Samsung UK account reportedly responded to a question from a user with advice to watch out for an update.
“Micro-updates are in the process of being rolled out to correct issues relating to device performance and stability,” the company wrote. “Keep checking for these on your device via Settings > About device > Software update > Update now”.
The problem appears to have been common for a couple of weeks and early indications of frustration are found on an XDA developers website.
The handsets are said to be “aggressively” killing off applications and sparing the user only 200MB-400MB of RAM.
Samsung has faced some criticism here, and customers are comparing the performance of its new handsets with specifications from two years ago.
“I’ll open up chrome, go to a webpage, exit chrome, and then when I come back to chrome it starts reloading the page again,” wrote one.
“I’ve noticed it refreshes or restarts a ton of apps after I come back to them after a short amount of time and it never puts me where I last left off in the app. Even my two year old phones keep apps open longer.”
