Today’s world is full of people trapped in shadows of contradictions. My understanding of human history and more importantly, studying the Bible as a Christian, I have come to terms with the fact that we live in a tainted world. The world economy is going to get worse. Increasingly, poverty will take its toll among nations, tragedies will occur at far more astronomical proportions, diseases will continue to plague mankind, rumours of wars will not cease and suicide bombers will continue in their murderous streak. Our pop culture will become more vexatiously immoral, more men and women will become lovers of themselves and homosexuality will continue in worse ways than we have seen with the legalizing of gay marriage.
I have since stopped getting shocked or surprised with the state and deteriorating condition of our world. Such is the nature of a world corrupted by sin since the fall of Adam.
But as believers, are we expected to fold our arms and watch in helplessness till thy kingdom come? Are we going to cave into the increasing wickedness that is taking over our world? Not at all! We have been mandated to stand out and become the Light of our world.
If nothing about Satan inspires us as Christians, his work ethic should give us something to ponder on. Satan is constantly at work walking to and from the earth like a roaring lion seeking whom to devour; making frantic attempts at fulfilling his mission as the thief that comes to steal, kill and destroy. (Job 2:2)
In today’s pop culture, Satan’s biggest weapon is to make the abnormal the new normal. To achieve this, he targets the rich, the famous and the influential and uses them as ambassadors to grow his ministry on the face of the earth.
The interesting question is: can we stop Satan, the prince of the world from corrupting the world? No, at least not in that sense until Jesus returns to execute the final judgment on Satan and his fallen angels. But we can work radically towards reducing and curtailing his influence on the face of the earth because as Christians our mandate is to go into the entire world, preaching the gospel and delivering men from the shackles of Satan. It was for this very purpose that the Son of man was manifested; to destroy the works of the devil. (Matthew 28:19, I John 3:8)
We have a lot we can achieve reaching out with the gospel of the love and mercy of God. But how we reach out is even more fundamental than reaching out itself. In an increasingly dynamic world, our methods must become even more dynamic exploring diverse mediums. The Church needs to become more agressive in taking the gospel of Christ to the world. For instance, how does the church treat its gospel artistes? How well do we sponsor and promote their albums? How much is the Church willing to invest in gospel pop culture? What is the Church’s equivalent of MTV? How many secular radio stations are out there owned and operated from the background by the Church? Does the Church have its own GQ magazine that promotes Christian-oriented apparel? It’s not a question of competing with the world but dominating our world as the salt of the earth. It is not a request from our God. It is mandatory.
We live in a time and age when many have grown up questioning their identity, their sanity and their sexuality. No thanks to Hollywood and the global pop culture movement! In their state of doubt and confusion, Satan is reaching out to men offering death packaged as ‘solutions’ to their problems. When he is not reaching out in the nightclubs, he is reaching out through dysfunctional homes and schools, when he is not using alcohol, he is using music, fashion or television.
The result of Satan’s outreach in today’s world is tragedies like Caitlyn Jenner. Sadly, the world will never see a problem with Caitlyn Jenner because the prince of the world is investing time, resources and technology into packaging and presenting immorality as the new cool. The frying-pan-to-fire transition from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner is the solution Satan is offering to today’s disturbed world. Gay marriage, cocaine addiction and pornography are the solutions Satan is giving to a troubled world.
I watched on E! how Caitlyn’s aged mother struggled with the thought of her son transforming from the little baby boy Bruce she birthed and raised into a successful male athlete who won an Olympic gold medal for America into a high-heel strutting Ms. Caitlyn! She couldn’t come to terms with what had happened to Bruce. She looked into his eyes and asked her son the coldest and most touching rhetorical question I have ever seen a mother ask her child; “You have a soul right? And your soul is the same as the one you had when you were a baby boy”. For her, the condition of Bruce’s soul meant more to her in the midst of all the pain and disappointment, not the plastic confusion Hollywood and Vanity Fair were struggling to market to the world branded as ‘Caitlyn Jenner.’
At this point, let me make it clear that this is not about passing judgment or condemnation on anyone. Gays, lesbians, transgender and everyone struggling with ‘something’ in their personal lives are as entitled to the love of God just as the rest of us all. I can’t even begin to imagine the struggles that some people go through and the genuine desires and efforts they have made to find a solution.
But the crux of the matter is: Jesus is the only sure solution to any life’s situation, challenge or crisis. Sometimes I just imagine how many more Jenners are out there looking out for a real solution. This is why we must act as believers, and act fast too. The destiny of the world out there is usually a function of who captures them first: Satan or the Church. There is no time.
We are the ones who will reach out to this world with the help that they need. Hollywood with all its lights, cameras, action is far from the solution the Caitlyn Jenners of our world are yearning to grasp. Hollywood will fade away but the word of our God will remain.
At the height of Micheal Jackson’s career, he was the symbol of global pop culture. It was difficult to imagine a day would come when Micheal would become history. There are countless other examples from Marilyn Monroe to Marvin Gaye.Micheal had his era; the era of the king of pop. But all of that fame and glory has since passed away but there is a King of Kings whose throne will never come to an end. His name is Jesus and His gift of life is freely given to all who believe and accept that He is Lord. He alone can provide a permanent solution to problems like Caitlyn Jenner.
