…TASKS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO REVISIT DAM CONSTRUCTION
A former Minister for Aviation during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the current Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District in the red chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Stella Adaeze Oduah recently spoke and advocated for the victims of the perennial flood disasters in the Country.
The Senator through her motion titled the ”Construction of Dams to remedy the Perennial Flood Disasters in Nigeria” brought before the Senate and debated as the second order of the day at Senate Plenary on Thursday 19th October, 2015 made a case for the victims who lose innumerable properties in the recurrent flood while also urging relevant stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to revisit the proposed construction of dams that would contain the water influx whenever Lagdo Dam in Cameroun is released.
In her lead debate she spoke about the plight of avoidable losses to of millions of Nigerians who are inhabitants of communities along the Niger – Benue River trough. The soft spoken senator displayed a strong sense of patriotism and concern through the motion as she silenced critics via her astute presentation of the motion leading to an overwhelming support of the motion by all senators. She did well to research into the casualty figures and the NEMA estimated loss of over 2.5 Trillion Naira to flood just in the year 2012 alone.
She also reminded her colleagues that the flood situation had further worsened the challenge of Internally Displaced Persons IDPs and has caused irreparable damage resulting in permanent devastation of vast stretches of arable lands nationwide and ultimately loss of food, cash and export crops and revenue for both individuals and government. Several Senators who spoke on the motion including Senators Abubakar Kyari – Borno North, Bassey Akpan – Akwa Ibom North/ East, Peter Nwaboshi – Delta North, Uche Ekwunife – Anambra Central, Binta Garba – Adamawa North, Aliyu Sabi – Niger North and Bukar Mustapha – Katsina North didn’t mince words in galvanizing support for the passing of the prayers of the motion as the recurring incident of flood was becoming out of hand.
The Senate president Dr. Bukola Saraki as well spoke in favour of the motion after the senate accordingly resolved to urge the Federal Government to convene a Stakeholders meeting to ex-ray the recurring situation with the view to proffering a lasting solution to flood disasters; urge the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to revisit the proposed construction of Dasin Hausa Dam and any other Dams as the case may be to take in the flood waters from Lagdo Dam in Cameroun. And every other Dam causing flood should be looked into and finally commend NEMA, PCFR and other relevant agencies, organizations and individuals whose efforts in creating awareness has led to reduction in causality level.
