The Edo State police command on yesterday confirmed the death of a medical doctor identified as Dr. Ogbeide Osesogie, who died under mysterious circumstances in Benin City, Edo state.
Dr. Ogbeide was until his death the Head of Department (HOD) of Radiology, and Associate professor of Radiology and Vice Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), UBTH chapter.
There were two sides of the story surrounding his death. While many in the hospital said the doctor was kidnapped and murdered, others are of the view that his murder was cult-related.
The Guardian gathered that Dr. Osesogie Ogbeide was declared missing on Saturday the 19th of January 2019, after he failed to return home.
Investigation revealed that, following extensive searches, his body was recovered from a private mortuary in Isihor and he was subsequently moved to the UBTH mortuary where extensive forensic investigations are being carried out to unravel the cause of his death.
The deceased was said to have returned to Benin from a trip on Saturday and was seen standing by the roadside in front of the hospital in Ugbowo, where he was said to have been whisked away in a car by unknown men.
The Edo State commissioner of police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, who confirmed the incident on telephone, said, “It is not a case of murder or kidnap. The doctor checked into a hotel on Saturday. He was not seen going out on Sunday nor did anyone visit him, so, the door was forced open on Sunday.
“He was found lying face-down on bed. The bedsheet was not even ruffled. There was also a bottle of soft drink in the room.
“There was no sign of struggle or anything on him. We are looking into a case of suicide or suffocation. We are waiting for the autopsy report from the hospital. and as a doctor, they are going to do a scan on the body.” He said.
