Tenant Sets 83 Year Old Landlord Ablaze over Unpaid rent (PICTURED)
There was pandemonium in Uwa Street Benin City, the Edo State capital on Wednesday when one Jeff Obasohan allegedly set ablaze his 83-year-old landlord, identified as Pa Joseph Iyen over unpaid rent.
The incident which occurred at the deceased’s residence in Oredo Local Government Area drew the attention of residents in the area who thronged the scene to sympathise with the victim’s family.
The protracted quarrel which ensued over unpaid rent was said to have heightened when the late Pa Iyen gave Obasohan two quit notices on two occasions which Obasohan allegedly refused to heed.
The disagreement was said to have reached its peak leading to the tragic end of the landlord who died following the severe burns he sustained from the fire.
The remains of the late Pa Joseph Iyen were later taken to a mortuary by security operatives.
The wife of the deceased, Mrs Esther, alleged that the tenant had threatened her life and that of her late husband when he failed to pay his electricity bill as at when due.
The daughter of the late landlord, Faith, alleged that the tenant had been officially asked to leave the building in 2014 and 2015.
Eganbor, who described his father as a ‘kind’ man, called for a thorough investigation on the matter and ensure justice for the aggrieved family members.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Osifo Abiodun, when contacted on telephone on Thursday confirmed the incident and said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
