Russian President, Vladimir Putin spent his 63rd birthday playing ice hockey with some of the sport’s biggest stars – and you’ll never guess who ended up being the hero.
In a match broadcast live on national television, the Russian president scored seven goals as his team, which included NHL legends Vyacheslav Fetisov and Pavel Bure, won 15-10.
Putin took to the ice rink in Sochi to shoot some pucks just hours after Russian TV showed dramatic footage of cruise missiles being fired from warships in the Caspian Sea.
Defence minister Sergei Shoigu said they destroyed 11 Isis targets in Syria. And after briefing Putin about the war effort, he joined the president on the ice in the Shayba arena, which hosted events during the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The opposing team included tycoons Gennady Timchenko and Arkady Rotenberg.
The two men, who are close friends of the president, have both been subject to Western sanctions since Russia annexed Crimea.
Putin was presented with a trophy after his team’s victory – as well as a medal for his contribution to ice hockey in Russia.
