You Acted in Ignorance Sirawoo Tells FCT SWAN
The National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN, Honor Sirawoo has condemned the decision of the FCT chapter in pulling out from the association calling it “an expression of ignorance”.
The FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), had on Thursday dissociated itself from the Honor Sirawoo led national body. The Chapter’s decision was as a result of the incorporation of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) by its national leadership,
“My attention has been drawn to it, though, the National Executive Council (NEC) of SWAN will take a look at it critically. But from my perspective I think this is an expression of ignorance, expression of ignorance, expression of ignorance. I decided to repeat it (expression of ignorance) thrice to further push the point that whatever anybody was doing, was only a show of ignorance”.Sirawoo told Breaking Times in an exclusive telephone interview.
The SWAN President, maintained that ignorance was never an excuse in the eyes of the Law. He said SWAN have the capacity to deal with all issues, because the association is guided by rules and no chapter can exist in isolation.
“Ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law, when you act in ignorance, the law will not join you in doing that.so if you act in ignorance the law will still interpret your actions and the requisite and necessary punishment or the way the law have being designed to address such issues will be implemented. If is the issue of implementing the rules guiding the association which is SWAN, we have the capacity and we are going to implement it.No chapter or branch of SWAN can affiliate with any person, first you are not independent, you work under a starter. So if any person does anything outside law, that is an expression of ignorance and law who is not a respecter of ignorance will also be used to access whatever anybody has done”.
On the choice of some chapters pulling out from the Honor Sirawoo
led National SWAN. The National President was however quick to point out the freedom of association enshrined in 1999 constitution as amended, but stated that once one denounces its membership of the association all the paraphernalia attached with association must be dropped. He went further to declare that SWAN which is a statutory body will still continue in all the states in Nigeria.
“We cannot force anybody to be in SWAN, if you say you are no longer in SWAN, we accept it. There is nothing anybody can do about that but the NEC will look into it, but if you do anything with the name of SWAN, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will not protect you.Everybody has the right to dissociates from any association but the association still continues. SWAN has 37 chapters, if 1, 2, 3 says they don’t want to continue, in any case SWAN is a statutory body which must operate in all the states including FCT.We will get people to run the association because SWAN is a vehicle which must exist in every state, so if few persons say they are no longer part of SWAN we shall get people to operate the association in those states”.Sirawoo added
The FCT Chapter had issued a communique at the end of November 8, 2018 Congress where members unilaterally pledged that they will remain an affiliate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and not part of the SWAN registered by its (SWANI) President, Honor Sirawoo.
Lagos and some other South West Chapters had already taken similar decision to stick with the body affiliated to the NUJ.
